The Institute encourages its member organisations to engage in corporate social responsibility, and leads by example. The Institute itself does this through its ‘Everybody Counts’ program which supports important charities such as Alzheimer’s Australia NSW, Camp Quality, Inspire Foundation, Cancer Council, RSPCA, Sane Australia and The Smith Family. The Everybody Counts Program model incorporates three key opportunities for participation:
• Workplace giving
• Volunteer opportunities
• Pro-bono skills transfer at a national and local level.
Students registered with the Institute are also invited to participate in the Chartered Accountants Student Challenge. Students get involved by creating a solution to a real-life business problem facing an organisation. In 2009, that organisation was the community funded charity, Cancer Council. The Challenge is designed to give students a taste of the varied and interesting issues they will likely encounter in the business world.
In 2009, the overall winner of the Student Challenge was Assurance Associates Australia. They created a model that allows Cancer Council Australia to evaluate proposals for Licensing or Cause Related Marketing (CRM) campaign partnerships with third parties.
