5. Communicating with staff

Changes to Gas & Gear were communicated to staff through a series of company meetings at which the changes were explained to staff.

Individual managers discussed changes with their teams. First the National Retail Manager communicated changes to direct reports who then cascaded the information down to their reports and so on. Staff feedback and questions were encouraged the entire way throughout the process.

Leaders took a hands-on approach by visiting new stores and stores that were being upgraded. They also worked with staff to ensure that everyone understood the new business plan and objectives.

As part of the change strategy, BOC introduced a Retail Development Program (RDP) to develop staff capacity to implement vital changes to the retail business. The refurbishment and upgrading of the retail channel facilities was only part of the process - for the change to be effective, it was critical that employees' skills and capabilities were also developed and improved.

The RDP is a two-year training course, developed in partnership with Strive Training Australia Pty Ltd, a Queensland based National Training Provider that leads to nationally accredited qualifications in retail skills and competencies. Selected training modules are delivered in a variety of formats including one-on-one training, group sessions and on- the-job activities.

Paddy Goodchild, BOC Retail Manager South Pacific, comments that, "The Retail Development Programme provides training that is customized to BOC's requirements and is relevant to the day to day operation of G&G. It also provides our staff with a clear development path from induction through to career progression."
