Meat & Livestock Australia: Creating a sustainable beef industry - Managing on-farm operations

Creating a sustainable beef industry

This Case Study highlights ways the beef industry is applying concepts of environmental sustainability, social responsibility and ethical practices. It outlines the nature of Meat and Livestock Australia and its role in assisting the widespread adoption of production systems that preserve the environment.

As a result of reading this Case Study the student should be able to:

  • Understand the importance of the beef industry to Australia's economy
  • Appreciate the industry's commitment to preserving the environment
  • Analyse ways the industry has adopted the concepts of sustainability, social responsibility and ethical practices
  • Explain how producers are using technology to improve farm operational management systems.

Introduction

Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) provides services to livestock producers, processors, exporters, food service operators and retailers.

Managing on-farm operations

Farmers are at the front line of environmental protection and sustainability.

Using environmental management

An increasingly environmentally conscious community has expectations of farmers owing the environment a 'duty of care'.

Managing the herd to reduce greenhouse gases

The build up of greenhouse gases in the lower atmosphere prevents heat from the sun's rays escaping back into space. When the balance of greenhouse gases is disrupted more heat is trapped and the earth gradually heats up. This process can be simply termed 'global warming'.

Feedlots

Feedlots have become an important value-adding part of the beef supply chain.

Withstanding drought

Australia has experienced widespread, long-term drought conditions which have had negative effects for producers, the industry and the overall economy.

Conclusion

Community beliefs about good corporate citizenship and social responsibility are increasingly influencing consumer decisions.
